Welcome to Alpha-state Therapy

Michael W. Laybourn is qualified in Clinical Hypnosis, Psychotherapy and is a Registered General Nurse with over 15 years experience. He is a member of the Hypnotherapy Society, General Hypnotherapy Register, General Hypnotherapy Standards Council and the UK Nursing and Midwifery Council.

He undertakes regular continuous professional development updates and is currently undertaking further professional studies with British Hypnosis Research, under the supervision of Stephen Brooks, the worlds leading authority in Indirect Hypnosis, Ericksonian Psychotherapy and NLP.

"My own journey into hypnosis and psychotherapy came from being on the receiving end of it and experiencing it first hand for myself. With me it was stop smoking. I had a moderate smoking habit (around 20 a day) but despite seeing the effects of smoking from my time working on various wards and departments in NHS hospitals around the North-East, I still found myself unable to stop. I tried everything, including every form of nicotine replacement therapy available. Nothing worked. To my shame, I even worked as a practice nurse, running smoking cessation sessions, encouraging patients to give something up which I myself could not.

As a last ditched attempt, I booked a smoking cessation session with a hypnotherapist. The session was an epiphany! I knew something happened when I left the consulting room. A weight had lifted. I was a non-smoker. And I have not had, or wanted, a fag ever since.

It was one of those “thunk” moments. A hypnotherapist had done something others couldn’t. I made up my mind there-and-then that I was going to learn how to do this.

After many bank loans and much studying, I qualified. And now, combining my nursing/medical training with my hypnotherapy and psychotherapy background, I can offer help to people with all sorts of problems. And I am pleased to convey a very satisfactory success rate.

When people come to see me with their problems or issues, I don’t merely see them as something to be “fixed”. I see them as people – as individuals who have the right to a nice life, living the way they want to live. I don’t give everything a “blanket-approach”. Every single person is unique. As every single person is different, every approach needs to be different. This is why I developed the Unique Bespoke Recording Service. Because whilst some things can follow a format (e.g. Stopping smoking) most others cannot. An individual approach is needed to ensure maximum benefit and success.

My sessions for all manner of problems are unique and totally client centred. Sessions are personal and unhurried. I normally only allow myself 2 fee paying clients per day, so there are no real time constraints (other than common sense). Hypnotherapy normally lasts around 45 minutes, but if it needs longer, it needs longer. If it takes an hour, hour-and-half or 2 hours, then that’s how long the session takes. There is no change to my fee. Stop smoking sessions take up to an hour-and-a-half, but these can also over-run – sometimes to 2 or (rarely) 3 hours You Pay For The Session, Not For The Time.

My aim is for clients to feel that something has happened during the session, and know that something has happened afterwards.

I hope that all my clients reach an epiphany, just as I did, and gain satisfactory and lasting relief from whatever it is that ails them."

What is Hypnosis/Hypnotherapy?

Hypnosis is a natural state of deep physical and mental relaxation. It is an altered state of awareness where the conscious, critical part of the mind is “dampened down” or calmed, and the subconscious/unconscious non-critical part of the mind becomes receptive to the beneficial suggestions given by the therapist. Hypnotherapy is psychotherapy to a client in a hypnotic (and receptive) state. During hypnosis, the therapists beneficial suggestions can be embedded into the clients subconscious, overriding the old “mental software” with a new “program”. The subconscious then runs on the upgraded software, bringing about transformation and beneficial changes in the clients life.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is It Safe?

Hypnotherapy is perfectly safe. Nobody has ever come to any harm in hypnosis. It is a natural state which everyone has entered many times in their lives before. Just as you’re drifting off to sleep and just as you’re beginning to wake are just 2 examples. It is natural, drug-free, safe and effective.

Can I be made to anything against my will?

No. Nobody can be made to do anything against their moral, religious or ethical values. The client is in control at all times. All hypnosis is essentially “self hypnosis”, the therapist merely being a “tour guide”. They show you where to go and what to do, but they don’t pick you up and carry you on their back. The control always lies with the client at all times.

What does it feel like being hypnotised?

Very relaxing. But other than that, it varies amongst individuals. Some people report a sense of heaviness, others a feeling of lightness. Some people feel tingling sensations or see moving shapes or colours. Some people experience none of these. Some people feel nothing more than a deep sense of relaxation. There is no such thing as a “typical hypnotised feeling” The experience is different for everyone.

Will I be asleep?

No. You are focused and in control at all times. Occasionally, because it is so relaxing, some people “drift off”, but that’s fine. Excellent results can be obtained even in light sleep states, as everything still gets absorbed subconsciously.
